Making the most of your garden this March

Our gardens and wild spaces really start to come alive in March and need regular tending to keep them looking at their very best.

You may have a lot of bulbs in flower or going over at this time of year and it’s important to look after these for future blooms but also prepare for the coming seasons.

  • Deadhead and remove seed heads from daffodils and other spring bulbs, leaving the foliage to die back naturally.

  • Move faded bulbs from containers to your garden for flowers next year.

  • Plant summer flowering bulbs in pots and borders for a great summer display.

  • Keep on top of weed growth which will become more prolific as the season progresses.

  • Check for pests such as aphids and remove before they can establish.

March can be a difficult time for wildlife, but you can help with these simple tips..

  • Feed garden birds with calorie rich foods such as sunflower hearts and fat balls.

  • Collect lawn clippings and set aside in one corner to encourage bees and slow worms to nest.

  • Consider planting for pollinators with pollen rich plants.

  • Feed visiting hedgehogs using meat based cat or dog food (preferably chicken in jelly).
